Daytona Bike Week 2016

As the weather finally warms up in North Florida, thousands of motorcyclists will head to Daytona Beach for its annual Bike Week celebration.  Roaring engines, leather, beer gardens and night life are just a few reasons to head to Florida.  The Law Firm of Massey & Duffy, PLLC supports our local riders and visitors to the Sunshine State and offers some advice to help make your week a great experience:

It is no secret that Bike Week is heavily fueled on gasoline and alcohol, locals know this and so do the local law enforcement.  Florida Highway Patrol Officers will be setting up checkpoints along I-95 and other major corridors throughout Florida.  A DUI charge is a fast way to end your week, even before it starts.

  • Impairment begins with your first drink. If you plan to drink at all, find a place to park your bike and arrange other transportation.
  • Eat first. Before you drink stop to eat at one of the local restaurants in beautiful Daytona or Saint Augustine. Not only will you be able to enjoy some of the finest seafood and cuisine in Florida, but food, especially protein, helps absorb alcohol.  Drinking on an empty stomach will lead to you becoming intoxicated faster.
  • Focus on the company, rather than drinking. Bike Week happens only once a year so make plans with some friends and enjoy the atmosphere.  Limiting your drinks while still enjoying the live music and comradery of your fellow bikers will not negatively affect your experience.
  • Drinking all day in the Florida sun is a fast track to heat injuries.  Take a break daily to replenish yourself with cool water and take frequent breaks in the shade.  No one wants to finish Bike Week in the hospital.
  • Drive Safely. Leave lots of space between yourself and other vehicles.  Share the road with your fellow bikers and other motorists.  Avoid aggressive maneuvers and excessive speeds.  There is plenty of time to get where you want to be, don’t make bad decisions to save time or show off.
  • Use turn signals. Anyone who has been to Florida (or lives here) knows that our drivers are notorious for not using turn signals.  However, drivers will normally accommodate your intentions if they know in advance.  If your bike is not equipped with electric turn signals, then brush up on your hand and arm signals before you head on the road.  It may save your life.
  • Don’t drive distracted. GPS, surround sound systems and hand-free cell phone devices are becoming more and more standard on new motorcycles.  Please turn them off.  Distracted driving is the second biggest cause of motorcycle accidents (next to DUI).
  • Increase your visibility. Wearing a brightly colored vest or attaching flags to your bike are good ways to increase your chances of being seen by other motorists.  Motorcycles have a small silhouette and it often are not seen on first glance.
  • Hire an attorney. If you are involved in a vehicle accident or charged with a DUI, make sure to hire an attorney immediately.  Do not make any statements without first consulting legal counsel.
